Hurricane Awareness

The annual Atlantic basin hurricane season is June 1st until November 30th.  The 2004 - 2005 were severe seasons that had major impact on the Indian Point community.  We experiences damage to our community and power outages.  We advise all homeowners to be proactive and be prepared.  If you rent your home, make sure that your tenants have the information necessary to survive the storm safely.

2010 Hurricane Season

Forecasters predict the 2010 hurricane season could be a busy one.  The forecast team at the National Weather Service has predicted an "active to extremely active" hurricane season with 14 to 23 named storms to form, with eight to 14 expected to be hurricanes and three to seven developing into major hurricanes, category 3 - 5, with sustained winds of 111 miles per hour or greater.  Now is the time take responsibility for storm readiness.

Weather Terms


Flash Flood Watch - The National Weather Service issues this type of watch when local flooding can be expected within 12 to 24 hours.  Stay alert for possible issues to your safety and property.

Hurricane Warning - Hurricane conditions are expected in the specific area of the warning within 36 hours.  Don't wait for this warning to begin your storm preparation.  Plan and prepare ahead of time.

Hurricane Watch - Hurricane conditions are possible in the specified area of the watch, usually within 48 hours.

Storm Warnings - Issued when winds of 55 to 73 mph are expected.  If a hurricane is expected to strike a coastal area, gale or storm warnings will not usually precede hurricane warnings.

Tornado Warning - Indicate a tornado has been spotted.  Be prepared to take shelter.

Tornado Watch - Conditions are favorable for this type of storm.

Tropical Depression - Rotary circulation at the surface with a highest constant wind speed of 38 mph.

Tropical Storm - Distinct rotary circulation with constant wind speed ranges of 39 to 73 mph.
